Coffee Shop Series: Cold Blooded Coffee & Roastery

Cold Blooded Coffee & Roastery is truly a one-stop coffee shop.  At their location on Walnut Street in Murphysboro, not only can you get both hot and cold coffee, tea and other treats to enjoy immediately, but you can stock up on cans and growlers of the cold brew that Cold Blooded is known for!

When I visited the shop earlier this summer, tables were available outside as well as inside the beautiful historic building.  Spacious and airy with modern tunes playing in the background, the space is perfect for a quiet cup of coffee alone or to meet with a group of friends or coworkers.  According to the barista I spoke to on the day of my visit, the recessed shelves holding Cold Blooded merchandise were originally windows, now covered by the building next door that was constructed years ago.  With pressed metal ceilings, exposed brick walls, and modern light fixtures to pick up where the floor to ceiling front windows leave off, the atmosphere is a big part of the charm at Cold Blooded.

According to Cold Blooded Coffee's website, the business started out with founder, T.J. Cowan's venture into making his own cold brew at home for he and his wife, then friends, then eventually...Cold Brew Coffee & Roastery!  Along with his coffee shop in Murphysboro, several businesses sell cold brew, hot coffee, whole roasted beans and ground coffee so Cold Blooded stretches far and wide.  Cowan works with a broker to import beans from Colombia, Guatemala, Sumatra, Honduras, Papua New Guinea, Costa Rica and Uganda to obtain the finest quality for his customers and roasts all beans on his own.  While at Cold Blooded in Murphysboro, I had a difficult time deciding what to order.  Drip coffee, pour-over coffee in a variety of different roasts from Kenya light roast to Colombian decaf, espresso, cafe mocha, cappuccino and dirty chai lattes are some of the hot drinks on the menu.  Cold brew (of course), iced Americanos, iced lattes and Ghirardelli iced frappes, and a variety of iced teas are cold drink options.  Milk alternatives include almond, oat, soy and coconut.  I decided on a cold brew coffee with oat milk creamer and the house made simple syrup for sweetener.

One benefit of cold brew is that the process in which it is made removes the bitterness that hot brewed coffee can include.  Cold brew is made by steeping ground coffee at room temperature for 12 to 24 hours.  I had purchased cold brew at other locations before, obviously, but Cold Blooded packs a punch!  It was smooth, very rich, and kept me going well into the evening.  Every Mom's dream!  Both growlers and cans of cold brew are for sale at Cold Blooded.  Empty growlers can be exchanged for refills, too, to cut down on harm to the environment and for a bit of a discount!  Half gallon (64 ounce) growlers are offered in original dark roast or decaf and any flavor, either with sugar or sugar free, can be added free of charge.  New growlers are $20.80 plus tax and exchanges are $10.80 plus tax.

Cold Blooded also sells real fruit smoothies, lemonade, hot chocolate and Cold Blooded energy drinks which are comprised of caffeine from un-roasted coffee beans and a variety of flavors which come from the cherry around the coffee bean. These energy drinks are 100% natural with a fruity carbonated finish.  Snacks at the counter include muffins, coffee cake, biscotti, protein bars and even artisan ice cream for an extra boost to pair with a caffeinated beverage.  Flavored syrups are available to make any concoction imaginable and house made lavender syrup and simple syrup were on the shelves when I visited.  The staff is friendly and helpful and the entire coffee shop is neat, clean and inviting.  Parking is relatively convenient with spots both out front and on the side streets.  Another benefit of visiting Cold Blooded is the main street, hometown feel of the neighborhood with a posh vibe to the atmosphere and beverages inside.  Unique shops around the Walnut Street cafe are aplenty as Murphysboro continues to offer more boutique stores.  So whether you decide to relax in the cool interior, people-watch from the outdoor tables, or take your cup to-go, Cold Blooded is a great place to refuel!
